He is the middle of three children, describing his older brother Dan as very successful and his younger sister as the “princess” of the family. Dan, who lives several states away, has just accepted a new position in his district as superintendent. Eric’s father, now retired, was a successful physician, and his mother, also retired, was a nurse. Eric has worked in public education for more than 25 years, first as a teacher and then he moved into administration in order to make more money. After serving as a vice principal for four years, he is now mid-way through his second year as the principal at a large urban high school. Eric discloses that he has just received the results of a formal evaluation and performance review completed by his superintendent. The feedback for Eric indicated that he is underperforming in many of his roles as principal and contained several areas for professional growth. Eric has come to counseling to discuss his dissatisfaction in his job, as well as feeling generally unhappy in life. He misses spending time in the classroom with students, and he wonders if he is cut out for being an administrator.
