A grоup оf vоlcаnoes lies in the oceаn to the west of the lаrge continent (see the volcanoes map). Inspect this light grey sample, sample 2, taken from this area to better understand what is happening at this location: Visual Description The rock has a dark grey to grey-green overall colour, with a speckled appearance. Embedded throughout the darker, fine-grained groundmass are numerous lighter-coloured, angular to slightly elongated crystals. These crystals are pale white to light grey and are scattered unevenly across the surface. Many are several millimetres long and stand out clearly against the darker background, giving the rock a distinctly porphyritic texture. The surface is rough and granular, with visible variation in grain size. The fine-grained matrix forms the majority of the rock, while the larger light crystals protrude slightly, catching the light and creating small highlights. Some darker mineral grains are also visible, adding further contrast to the texture.
