As you explain the different eras/movements in detail, refer frequently to important authors and texts by name. You should quote occasionally. You may use a printout of important quotations from the literature, not no other notes. Cite prose by page number and poetry by line number. You obviously won't have time to include every author we've studied. Prioritize as you see fit, but be sure to cover each major century/era/movement found in the suggested outline below, one paragraph per item: I. Realism or Naturalism: Twain, Crane, London II. Modernism: Frost, Cummings, Eliot, Pound, Williams, Stevens, Hemingway, Fitzgerald III. Early and Midcentury Feminism: Chopin, Gilman, Plath, Sexton IV. The Harlem Renaissance and Later African-American Literature: Hughes, Cullen, McKay, Baldwin, Morrison, Walker V. The Contemporary Period: Cheever, Vonnegut, Faulkner, O'Connor, Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti Write for your FULL TWO HOURS. The more detail, the higher your grade. (The less detail, the lower your grade.) Do not make the common mistake of writing for only a hour, or of writing only a paragraph. Produce a full, detailed essay. The exam has a dramatic effect on your overall class grade (15%), so put in your very best effort here.
