Level 1 is the highest designation for an emergency room, and indicates that such an ER can provide the highest level of surgical care to trauma patients, such as victims of car accidents or gunshots. It has been found that this level of care can reduce mortality of patients by 25%. Open since Thanksgiving Day in 1901, the Atlanta Medical Center is located in the Old Fourth Ward of Atlanta, the area where Martin Luther King, Jr. grew up and the location of the Ebenezer Baptist Church where King was minister. It primarily serves the nearby population, which is predominantly minority and has a very large share of low-income residents. As such, it treats large numbers of uninsured patients. Georgia is one of twelve states that has not expanded Medicaid access, under the Affordable Care Act. Well, let me rephrase that. The Atlanta Medical Center used to treat large number of insured patients. This is because, three years ago, in November of 2022, Wellstar – the nonprofit health system that operates this hospital along with nine other Georgia hospitals - closed the Atlanta Medical Center. During the pandemic, a large number of “elective procedures” were delayed or canceled. Elective procedures are medical procedures that are not necessary to prevent imminent death, and they tend to be performed on patients with good insurance and ability to pay, and they also tend to have a good financial reward for the health system performing them. Additionally, the rapid increase in health care labor costs also impacted the AMC. Since it took over the AMC in 2016, Wellstar had spent over $300 million to cover losses and make improvements to the AMC. In 2021, the AMC was operated at a loss of over $100 million (and an additional approximate $50 million in losses over the prior year). These losses and its future outlook led Wellspan to decide to close the AMC. That is what has happened. However, it just so happens that we have a time machine!
