Reаd the fоllоwing mоvie review. Boyhood: A Gem in the Age of Big Business 1. Is cinemа аn art or a business? This question was once debatable, but now the answer seems clear. No one can deny that big business dominates the movie industry. Production costs began their steady rise in the 1950s, at a time when movies were competing with television for the first time. Costs exploded in the 1990s due to the increased use of computer technology, and they continue to soar. Today’s huge movie budgets, typically in the hundreds of millions of dollars, mean tremendous pressure on filmmakers because their movies are deemed successful if they are profitable and branded as failures if they are not. In the words of director Don Simpson, “Our obligation is to make money.” In this context, we must ask ourselves a new question: Can any movies be called art anymore? Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, released in 2014, furnishes evidence that the answer is yes. 2. While not everyone agrees on a definition of art, most people concur that it must be moving, honest, and full of emotion. Linklater’s movie is all of all these things, and it captures the essence of the human experience. Boyhood got its start in 2002, when Linklater recruited a young boy, Ellar Coltrane, to be the star of the film. Coltrane, who plays Mason Evans, Jr., a child growing up in a small town in Texas, was filmed by Linklater intermittently over the course of the next twelve years. In the film’s first scene, the six-year-old Mason is lounging outside his school, waiting for his mother to pick him up, and at the film’s conclusion, the eighteen-year-old Mason is moving into his college dorm room. The goal of the film is to depict an ordinary boy’s childhood and adolescence, and at this, the film succeeds. Mason grows up, and his family evolves, before the viewers’ eyes; the movie, in essence, is about life itself. 3 Mason’s parents—Olivia and Mason, Sr.—are played by Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke, and Linklater cast his daughter, Lorelei, as Mason’s sister, Samantha. Arquette’s work won her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, and Hawke’s performance was also highly praised. At the start of the film, the parents are divorced, and the children are being raised by their mother while their unreliable father merely drifts in and out of their lives. Their mother struggles financially and has a series of failed relationships, one of which is especially disastrous, as her second husband becomes abusive, and she and the children have to flee. Ultimately, she becomes a successful psychology professor, while Mason, Sr., also settles down, remarries, gets his life together, and begins to spend more time with his children. Apart from the traumatic experience with their stepfather, Mason’s boyhood is unexceptional. He goes to school, goes camping and bowling, and ends up at a Texas university. Witnessing intimate experiences from his life over the course of twelve years inspires viewers to develop a real affection for Mason and his family. 4 Although Boyhood was an independent production that cost just $4 million to make, it was heralded with nearly universal critical acclaim. Among its many accolades, reviews described the film as “extraordinary” and “the achievement of a lifetime.” In contrast, other films released the same year had budgets of more than $200 million and, in the eyes of many viewers, were nowhere near as moving. Thus, the film is a reminder that innovative storytelling can more than make up for small budgets, and that originality can still thrive in an era of endless sequels. Let’s hope that Linklater’s future films are characterized by the same sensitivity as Boyhood. Check (✓) the statements that the author of the review would agree with, based on the review.
