They used Chromobacterium violaceum (A) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (B) to examine the effects of the leaf and bark extracts (extracted using DMSO) from a tree (Combretum albiflorum). All of the wells have acyl homoserine lactones added and each row has three wells with the same samples (triplicate). The blue color in A is due to production of violacein, a pigment. The red color in B is due to pyocyanin production, a substance that is toxic to eukaryotic cells. The *** indicates this bar is significantly different from the DMSO (solvent control) bar.
