One оf Frаnklin Delаnо Rоosevelt’s mаjor initiatives during the First Hundred Days was to combat bank failures that had contributed to the stagnant economy of the Great Depression. By the time he had become president in 1933, between 1/3 and 2/5 banks that had been open at the start of the Great Depression had failed (and bank customers had lost their savings) and even Federal Reserve banks were on the verge of insolvency. During his Bank Holiday, Roosevelt encouraged congress to pass [BLANK-1] which established a federal deposit insurance system through the FDIC and prevented banks from investing in volatile purchases like stocks (instead, they had to limit their investments to low-yield, safe investments like bonds or currencies). This also prevented the mixing of commercial and investment banking. The legislation was a huge success in terms of stabilizing the banking industry; by 1936, not a single bank in the United States failed that year.
