In the leаdup tо the Prоtestаnt Refоrmаtion, many Christians came to view the Catholic Church as a hollow spiritual institution. One reason for declining faith in the church was the Roman Catholic Church’s response to the Black Plague. The pontiff during the Black Plague epidemic in Europe, [BLANK-1], varied his approach to the plague throughout his pontificate, but was ultimately ineffective in leading the people of Europe spiritually through the crisis. He first blamed the plague on “bad moonbeams” and then later claimed that the plague was a manifestation of God’s wrath (thus only sinful people would contract plague and die). The explanation that only bad people got the plague was particularly puzzling to the European populace – particularly when nuns ministering the sick and priests delivering last rites frequently caught the plague and died while “slacker priests” who refused to see the sick seemed to survive the plague.
