Almоst every film creаted hаs а sоundtrack (a selectiоn of songs played during the movie) to go along with the film. These songs help create the tone and mood of a scene that the director is trying convey to the viewers. For example, during a “scary” scene in a horror film, viewers may hear eerie, suspenseful music as the scene builds to a frightening moment. In a romantic film, viewers may hear a soft, romance song being played as the love interests finally kiss. Thus, the pairing of these songs with the plot of the movie helps create the intended tone, mood, or emotion that the audience is supposed to feel during that scene. Choose a short story that we have read (text must come from the readings this unit that have previously been assigned) and select three songs that you think would fit as a “soundtrack” for that text. Songs do not have to come from the same composer, but they should flow together well to make a cohesive soundtrack. Then, write an essay explaining how the songs you selected make a strong soundtrack for the text, relating the songs to the tone, plot, and/or mood of the text, while pairing the songs with specific scenes in the text. Your essay should be five paragraphs minimum and between 750 and 1000 words. The introduction paragraph should introduce the text and types of songs that you will be using for your soundtrack. The introduction should end with a thesis statement that highlights why you have chosen these particular songs for your soundtrack. Each body paragraph will have a quote from the text and an example from the song (you may quote the lines of the song or describe the musical tone) that relates to the moment you are describing. You will use in-text citations for both the text and the song (author or song writer/composer’s last name). The conclusion paragraph will wrap up the essay by re-stating your thesis statement and answering the “so what” (why you selected these songs and how they add meaning to the text). You must include a Works Cited page that includes citations for the text as well as the three songs that you chose. Additionally, ensure that you include appropriate in-text citations when you reference the text or song within your essay. In-text citations for works from the textbook are author’s last name and page number of quote (Faulkner 23). In-text citations for songs are like poetry: cite author/composer’s last name and line numbers of lyrics (Elton lines 34-33). Remember to include slashes for line breaks when citing poetry. Write in present tense. Do not use contractions. Do not use "you" or any other second person pronouns. You may use "I" or first person pronouns. Follow MLA format as much as possible.
