Pleаse reаd the fоllоwing prоmpt cаrefully.  Even if you were in class on Thursday, Dec. 5, where I first gave this prompt, you should still read it carefully to make sure you're following all directions explicitly.   Prompt: Selecting three texts from our reading list, only one of which can be a text you have previously used in an essay for this class, write a thesis-driven essay in which you discuss some change over the period of early American literature.  Your essay must use quotes as cited evidence from each text used and reflect specific concepts and terms presented in this course.  Your essay must be between 500 and 600 words, excluding quotes, and contain no secondary material outside the primary texts and course materials.  Otherwise, you should use your analysis of the texts and your broader understanding of this period of literature to justify a narrow thesis.   Do not waste time copying long quotes.  Instead, quote the first couple words, use an ellipsis, and then quote the last few words of the selected passage.  For example, the first three sentences of "The Tell-Tale Heart" would be referenced like this:   "It's True . . . I am mad?" (617).   This essay is worth a total of 150 points and will be graded on the following rubric:   25 Points:  Cohesive thesis developed throughout essay30 Points:  Appropriate references to primary texts30 Points:  Demonstration of relevant terms and concepts from course materials40 Points:  Relevant analysis of texts and course materials25 Points:  Organization and clarity of language
