A reseаrcher is studying the genоme оf gоpher tortoises found in North Centrаl FL when they find а ~1 kb sequence that they suspect is a transposable element. The sequence is flanked by a unique target site duplication everywhere it is found, and shows inverted repeat sequence on its 5' and 3' sides. Between the repeat regions appears to be a single reading frame that encodes an enzyme that has near-perfect sequence similarity a Transposase gene that was discovered recently in the eastern box turtle (a relative of tortoises). The researchers thus suspect that this is a(n) [blank1] that is [blank2]. Comparing this sequence to three additional gopher tortoise genomes from populations in Coastal GA, the FL Panhandle, and Southern FL, they find that all four populations have the suspected transposable element sequence, but it is found on a unique chromosome in each population.
