By the end оf Things Fаll Apаrt, we hаve seen that even a theme as cоmplex as that оf contradiction in the course can become even more uncertain and equivocal. That is because as contradictions mount, unreconciled, in the Modern Age, lines of distinction blur and make it difficult to tell even opposites apart. The same may be said for just about every other theme we have discussed this semester. If the theme has not come unraveled; then, surely, differentiations have become difficult. Certainly, the literature we have studied this semester supports the conclusion that nothing is certain. What I'd like you to do on this Final is to take a theme of your own choosing and examine its progress through the course chronologically. To help you do this, select one work from each of the lists below and a fourth work of your own choosing (4 in all). Examine your theme beginning with the earliest work you choose moving chronologically to the latest work you choose (the works are numbered in the lists below in the order in which they were written). As you examine your theme, be attentive to my comments in the paragraph above. You should find a sense of disintegration or uncertainty with your theme as you move through the course. Even if you do not, the distinctions you make should be harder and/or more suspect as you move through the course. Bear in mind that you will be judged as much by the ambition of your argument as you will by its success. Draw inferences. Quote text. Analyze it. Use it to support your inferences. And remember, good textual analysis never hurts an argument. Good luck.
