Literary Analysis Prompts Directions: Choose ONE of the following prompts below to write your essay on. 1. What is the theme(s) of the “The Fall of the House of Usher” ? In your thesis, be sure to state the theme and explain how the theme is developed (briefly). In your body paragraphs, give specific examples of scenes from the story in which the author developed the theme along with outside research (if necessary). Do not discuss more than 3 themes found in the story. 2. Often in literary works, authors choose a physical object which takes on a special significance in the work and becomes a symbol of something beyond itself. Show how, in the work that you read, the author uses a symbol to convey an important meaning. In your essay, focus on the symbol and what it symbolizes. Be sure to discuss how the author uses it to convey a message to the readers. You may choose three important symbols from the story, or you may choose to elaborate on one symbol in particular. 3. In your essay, focus on the conflict within the character. Be sure to include the price paid as part of the resolution and the lesson to be learned. 4. Does the author say one thing but mean another? Does the author take the subject seriously or treat it lightly? 7. In what way(s) does Edgar Allan Poe's life affect his writing of "The Fall of the House of Usher"? Would you say that the mood, tone, and overall structure of the work serves as a reflection of his upbringing?
