When you have worked in a field like healthcare, you become accustomed to answering some difficult questions and sometimes these answers you provide can create even more questions. As a healthcare worker, one thing I do to help with this is to speak in a professional and courteous manner. I work as a phlebotomist which is a fancy Latin word for a person who draws blood, and frequently, we are asked what tests the doctor has ordered on them and why they are doing it. While we may know the answers to these specific questions it is not within our scope of practice to say. So, for example, if I were asked why the doctor has ordered a magnesium level to be drawn on the patient I would say, “Mrs. Smith, that is a great question, but I don’t think I have a great answer for you. It looks like your scheduled to see the doctor after your vitals are taken though, I think that would be a great time for you to ask!” This may seem like a deflection on my part, but in truth, I have avoided answering a question I am not qualified to answer and directed the patient to the appropriate resource all while maintaining a sense of professionalism and courtesy.
