Yоu аre wоrking in the neоnаtаl intensive care unit (NICU) when a male infant is born to a 26 year old mother with no significant medical history.  The child is born premature with a birth weight of 4.4 pounds.  The baby is discharged in good condition after four days of hospitalization.  At 22 days of age the infant returned to the NICU with a cough and cyanosis (a bluish discoloration of the skin). The family reported a history of upper respiratory tract infections with fever. Upon evaluation the infant was noted to be lethargic and pallid and showed moderate respiratory distress. Physical examination revealed a decrease in air entry on the right side of the chest and a chest x-ray indicates right upper lobe collapse.     The patient is treated with antibiotics including meropenem and vancomycin.  In spite of receiving the highest level of care, his condition continues to deteriorate. Ultimately you diagnose the infant with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). This case study was modified from Alshihabi (2024) Cureus.
