Pоetry Explicаtiоn: Yоur textbook defines а poetry explicаtion as “A detailed analysis of a work of literature, often word by word and line by line; a close reading” (1440). Your book also has a detailed explanation for writing an explication on pages 507-513. However, these definitions can essentially be boiled down to an answer to a simple question “What does this poem mean?” For this assignment, write a 1200-1600 word essay in which you construct an argument that discusses what a poem from this unit means. Your discussion, in addition to analyzing the meaning of the poem at length, should use the vocabulary from the literary terms sheet (e.g., imagery, metaphor, simile, theme, or any other literary term that applies to poetry). As you look at the poem, consider what tools the author uses to create meaning in the poem: Start with the steps on pages 540-541 to help you get a general understanding of the poem. One of the things you may want to consider is the manner in which the speaker shows you the meaning of the poem. What images are present in the poem that affects the way we view the message that the poem is trying to convey? Is there an overriding or extended metaphor in the poem(s)? If so, what? Is the poem allegorical? If so, to what? How does the form of the poem affect the meaning? How does the social atmosphere in which the poem was written affect it? Don’t just answer these questions and call it an essay, but carefully read the poem and discover for yourself how what the poem means. Whatever you choose to focus on in this essay, remember to create an argument in your thesis and support that argument throughout the essay with evidence from the poem and secondary sources. Please use at least three secondary sources to support your thesis. You will also be asked to have a works cited page listing the poem and your secondary sources. Your essay should be written in the third person. Please Note: Assume that your reader has read the poem. Please do not write a “book report” essay where you just summarize the poem. Please have on proper attire, focus on the work (do not make phone calls, talk to someone else in the room, etc.) Assignment We can approach analyzing fiction from a number of different angles. For example, a quick JSTOR.org search for “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner and “How I met my Husband” by Alice Munro results in over a 1000 essays and articles for each story. With this in mind, select one of the topics below from the textbook and write a 4-6 page essay (minimum 1200 words) where you explore the theme or idea from your selected essay prompt. Your essay should have a clearly stated thesis and support that thesis with solid evidence. “Solid evidence” is going to be specific evidence from the text or your secondary source material (see below for minimum number of secondary sources). In addition, make sure you include literary terms as part of your vocabulary in this essay. What To Write About The first thing that you should do when composing this essay is to read through all the prompts below and select one or two that might work for you. After, brainstorm ideas on the prompt(s) you are interested in so you can narrow it down to just one topic and one story to write on. The prompts you can select from are the following: Suggestions for Writing #2 on pg.93 Suggestions for Writing #1, #2, or #3 on pg. 141 Suggestions for Writing #2 on pg. 191 Suggestions for Writing #1 on pg. 285 Suggestions for Writing #1 on pg. 329 Suggestions for Writing #1 or #2 on pg. 364 Suggestions for Writing #2 on pg. 387 Once you brainstorm, narrow your focus to one story and one prompt, you can then work to organize your ideas in a way that makes sense to both you and your audience (consider your audience to be other college students who have read the story you chose). If you are comfortable, use the 5 paragraph essay format for this essay in the drafting process, but since you will likely have more to say your essay can exceed 5 paragraphs (i.e., you can have more than 3 body paragraphs if necessary). A basic (but very limited) outline might look like this: Paragraph 1: Introduction that illustrates the topic and has the thesis near the end of the paragraph. Paragraph 2: Further discussion of your topic / First paragraph proving your thesis with specific examples from the text and secondary sources. Paragraph 3: Second paragraph proving your thesis with specific examples from the text and secondary sources. Paragraph 4: Third paragraph proving your thesis with specific examples from the text and secondary sources. Additional body paragraphs: Continue to prove your thesis with specific examples from your text and your secondary sources. Paragraph 5: Thorough conclusion that puts a good final stamp on your essay. In addition to your own analysis of the work, you must use at least three secondary sources that you incorporate into your argument.
