Answer the fоllоwing questiоns bаsed on the reаding below: Juneteenth is а holiday that celebrates the emancipation of slaves in the United States. The name comes from combining “June” and “nineteenth.” Although President Abraham Lincoln officially freed all slaves on January 1, 1863, the 250,000 enslaved people in Texas did not know they were free. Slave owners did not share this news and continued to keep slaves. That changed two and a half years later, on June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger and his troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and declared the end of slavery. An official order was issued stating that all slaves were free and now had equal rights. Most of the newly freed people had no interest in working for their former masters, even for pay. Many left Texas to begin new lives elsewhere. Despite their new legal status, life remained dangerous. Former slaves were often blocked from gathering to celebrate their freedom. The first Juneteenth celebration took place one year later, on June 19, 1866. In 1980, Texas became the first state to make Juneteenth an official holiday. Juneteenth received increased national attention during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, which called for greater recognition of Black history and civil rights. One year later, in June 2021, Congress passed a bill to make June 19, Juneteenth National Independence Day, a US federal holiday. Why did the slaves in Texas remain in bondage after the Emancipation Proclamation?
