Your room scan must provide clear and convincing evidence of all of the following: There is no one else in the room - you must control your exam environment. There are no other electronic devices in the room, except for the computer you are using to take the exam. Electronic devices that are clearly stored away are acceptable. If you need to use your phone for two-factor authentication, you may do so, but the phone must be properly and immediately stored away afterward. There are no notes, papers, books, or other materials that could be used to assist with the exam. There are no drinking cups, hats or other objects in your workspace (students have used the back of such objects to hide notes). Your scratch sheet is completely blank on both sides at the start of the exam. Note: this step is an additional one to shown in the below video. The student, in the video below, demonstrates how to complete an appropriate room scan. There is no prize for completing the scan quickly. Take your time and be thorough. You are responsible for making sure the scan clearly shows that your testing environment meets the required standards. If someone, such as a parent or roommate, enters your exam space, your exam may be flagged, and you risk having part or all of your exam not counted, or incurring a significant penalty for failure to adhere to required exam protocol. If a room scan is flagged by the AI, or if an exam is flagged for any other reason, the instructor will review the video. If the instructor determines that the room scan was not completed to reasonable expectations — for example, if it does not clearly show that there are no unauthorized devices, people, notes, or other sources of assistance, or there was another exam infringement, the video will be reviewed by another professor. If that professor also concludes that the student did not act reasonably, the student may receive a grade of zero for that exam, with no option to retake it, or a significant penalty. In some cases, the student may also be reported for academic misconduct. The decision to withhold credit for an exam, or to penalize a student for failure to follow required exam protocol will be final. To be clear, this message is primarily intended for only the one or two students who may be tempted to treat remote exams casually or inappropriately. Take the process seriously, follow the instructions, and you should have no issues. So, please don't be anxious about the exam process.
